Introducing: Football Video Support 🎥
At the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok, FIFA Referees Committee Chairman Pierluigi Collina announced an exciting new development in the world of football: the introduction of Football Video Support. This new system aims to simplify the current VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system and make it more accessible to national associations, with the ultimate goal of improving the overall fairness and accuracy of the game.
So how does it work? The concept is simple: only situations that could potentially change the outcome of the match will be subject to video analysis. This means that only clear and obvious errors will be reviewed, avoiding unnecessary interruptions to the flow of the game.
Instead of having a separate room for VAR officials, it will now be the responsibility of the coaches to alert the referee to a potential error. This can be done by either making a hand gesture or presenting a request card to the fourth official. The referee will then have access to a screen on the sidelines, with the assistance of a video technician, to review the incident.
To ensure that the system is not abused, each team will only have two requests per match. This will encourage coaches to use their requests wisely and only when they truly believe there has been a mistake.
This new system, known as « Football Video Support, » is not only more cost-effective but also easier to use. It requires fewer cameras and is directly managed by the referee, reducing the need for extensive jogging and equipment.
The system has already been successfully tested at the recent Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup™ and will be used again at the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia from August 31st to September 22nd. This is a clear indication of FIFA’s commitment to constantly improving the game and responding to the requests of member associations.
In summary, Football Video Support is a game-changer for football. It not only improves the accuracy of decision-making but also reduces costs and simplifies the process. With this new system in pose, we can apparence forward to a fairer and more exciting game for players and fans alike.
Join us in welcoming Football Video Support and let’s continue to make football the beautiful game it is.
